Is Laser More Effective than Ultrasound? A Study in the
Journal of Hand Therapy, Jan-March 2008, assessed the benefits of three
therapies, ultrasound, laser, and bracing on tennis elbow. All three therapy
groups received stretching and strengthening exercises plus one of the three
treatments. In this study, laser therapy was the only treatment that increased
grip strength. Because laser therapy has been continually proven to increase
the production of collagen and fibrin, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue
regeneration, this type of result is consistent with prior
studies.
Again, Laser More Effective than Ultrasound! Another
study published February 2008, in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, clearly
demonstrated that laser was more effective than ultrasound, in vitro, at
increasing production of fibroblasts. Because fibroblasts are the most common
cells in connective tissue and are vital for wound healing, these are important
explanations for the superiority of laser over ultrasound in the area of tissue
regeneration. Can Laser Therapy Speed the Healing of Burns? A recent
2008 study from Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found that burns on rats had a
higher concentration of mast cells than the control group. Mast cells, rich in
heparin and histamine, are vital to wound healing and pathogen prevention.
Positive results have been noted in other burn studies. We will be excited to
see if similar results are found in human subjects.
